Frequently asked questions for the Brain Games Chess.

Q:
 What is “Castling”?

A:    There are two Types of Castling, King's side and Queen's side. Both types allow you to
move the King toward the corner, bringing the Castle (or Rook) around the King toward the
center of the board.

Q:  How do I Castle?

A:   Click and drag the King to its destination. The Castle (Rook) will automatically move into
position. If you have moved the King but can't seem to "Castle", you have not met one or
more of the conditions of "Castling."

Q:  What are the conditions of “Castling”?

A:  There are a few things that must apply to the game situation in order for you to Castle
your King.
1.        Neither of the two pieces involved in the move (the King and the Rook) could have
previously moved.
2.        The King cannot be in "Check", castle out of "Check" or castle through "Check".
3.        There must be a clear path between the two pieces. All pieces including the Queen,
the Bishop and the Knight must have been moved previous to the "Castling".

Q:
Can I set a time limit for my match?

A:    Yes.   Click the "Game Setup" button, then select the "Clocks" tab. You may select an
infinite amount of time per player, or define the total time each player has to move. There
are three types of clocks to use:
•  Hourglass
•  Fischer Time
•  Minutes per Game

Q:   I just cannot beat this opponent. Can I surrender?

A:   Yes if the game looks as though you will not be able to win or draw, click on the
"Resign" button on the in-game toolbar.

Q:   Can I switch chess sets?

A:  Yes, by clicking the "Game Options" you can preview and select the different chess sets
and boards.

Q:    My friend says that I can load a game I find on the Internet using a PGN. Does Brain
Games Chess support this?

A:   A PGN, or Portable Game Notation, is a widely supported file format used to store the
movements of a game of chess.

And yes, you can download these files and load them into Brain Games Chess.  Search the
Internet for popular chess sites. Many will offer PGN's for download.

To load a PGN, you must copy the file into the PGN folder. Assuming you kept the default
installation settings, this folder is located at c:\Program Files\On Hand Software\ Brain
Games Chess\PGN. Once a file has been copied here, the games will be available in Brain
Games Chess by clicking "Learning Tools" and selecting the "Classic Games" tab.   (Make
note of the name of the PGN before copying it to this folder, so it’s easy to find.)
